An incredible accident happened on the director’s set Joel Souza. The 48 year old director of Rust talked about what happened on the set: Alec Baldwin accidentally killed a staff member with a gunshot.
The 64-year-old shot 42-year-old director of photography Halyna Hutcins in the chest. The director himself was also injured, but slightly. Joel Souza explained:
I am devastated by the loss of my friend and colleague, Halyna. She was kind, vibrant, incredibly talented, struggling and always pushing me to be better. My thoughts are for his family in this difficult time. I am grateful for the displays of affection we have received from our filmmaking community, the people of Santa Fe and the hundreds of strangers who have contacted me. It will definitely help my recovery.
At the moment it is not clear how a tragic mistake could have happened. Handing the gun to Alec Baldwin was assistant director Dave Halls who had no idea it was loaded with live ammunition and explained to the actor that it was safe. At the moment the investigations are still open and no charges have been brought about the incident.
