LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Alec Baldwin on Thursday denied responsibility for the fatal shooting of the director of photography on the set of his western “Rust,” saying he would kill himself if he believed he was at fault.
In an emotional interview with a television network, the actor said he did not pull the trigger on the gun he used during a rehearsal and that he does not think he will be criminally charged.
“I feel someone is responsible for what happened, but I know it’s not me. I could have killed myself if I thought I was responsible, and I don’t say it lightly,” Baldwin told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in his first public remarks about the October 21 accident on the film set near Santa Fe, Estado American from New Mexico.
Director of photography Halyna Hutchins died and director Joel Souza was injured when the gun fired a real bullet.
The incident, which is also analyzed as how live ammunition ended up on set, is still being investigated by authorities in New Mexico. No criminal charges have been filed.
Baldwin was told by members of the staff in charge of the weapons that his was “safe”.
“I have been informed by people in the know… that it is highly unlikely that I will be criminally charged with anything,” he said.
The actor said that “I would never point a gun at someone and pull the trigger on the person.”
In his first public description of what happened, he said that Colt’s revolver went off while he was cocking the gun and rehearsing camera angles with Hutchins.
“In this scene, I’m going to cock the gun. I said, ‘Do you want to see this?’ And she said yes. So I pick up the gun and start cocking the gun. I will not pull the trigger. I said, ‘Did you see this?’ She said, ‘Well, just disguise it and tilt it a little like that.’ And I cocked the gun and said, ‘Can you see this? Can you see this? And I drop the hammer from the gun and the gun goes off.”
