Joel Souza clarifies how the incident with Alec Baldwin happened
Documents indicate that Baldwin was sitting on a church pew, part of the film set. The scene I was going to record consisted of point a revolver at the lens. According to Souza, he and Hutchins were looking at the camera angle. It was there that Souza was shot in the shoulder, standing behind the director of photography.
“I heard something that sounded like a whip and then a loud pop”, said the director. After the shot, Souza remembers seeing Hutchins grabbed her waist and then tripped. The actor told detectives that she said that he couldn’t feel his legs.
The director also said that the weapon was searched before lunch, but not sure if this was rechecked when the recording crew returned to the recording scene. He also said that, as far as he knows, no one was checked to see if they were carrying live ammunition on their person. Only the weapons were inspected.
Souza said he remembered hearing someone scream “Cold pistol”, which implied that the weapon was not loaded with live ammunition. The one who gave that shout was Dave Halls, assistant director. He testified to an investigative detective that he did not know that the gun contained live ammunition.

One of the cameramen, Reid Russell, also revealed important information to detectives. He was standing near Hutchins and Souza when the shot occurred. Noted that Baldwin was explaining how he was going to get the gun for the scene. The film crew would still have been preparing for the scene, so no one started filming.
Russell also noted that, in earlier scenes, the actor had been especially careful with handling weapons, making sure there wasn’t a child around when he was shooting one.
