Alda Recas, the nurse activist for public health from Más Madrid who replaces Errejón in Congress

The resignation of Íñigo Errejón as a deputy will mean the entry into Congress of Alda Recas, nurse, activist for public health and current advisor to the Ministry of Health. Reca (Madrid, 1981) is a leader of Más Madrid, a party that will thus gain weight in the parliamentary group of the party led by Yolanda Díaz. Party sources confirm that Recas will collect the deputy’s certificate. If she were to resign, the next on the list is Podemos leader Isa Serra.

Recas was number 7 for Madrid on the Sumar lists in the general elections of July 2023. Hers was one of the so-called “starting positions”, that is, with a high probability of being elected. But Yolanda Díaz’s candidacy remained at six deputies.

Recas is a school nurse and has specialized with master’s degrees in Health Management and Public Health. Until the arrival of the leader of Más Madrid, Mónica García, to the Ministry of Health, Reca was a neighboring member in the capital for this party, as well as one of the members of the Regional Table, the internal body of the formation.

Previously, she was founder of the Madrid Nursing Association (AME) and one of the visible faces of the White Tide that, a decade ago, organized mass demonstrations against the cuts in healthcare imposed by the central and regional governments. There he met Mónica García.

Recas was expelled in 2017 by the Official College of Nursing of Madrid (CODEM) after a complaint from the General Council of Nursing Colleges of Spain and its then president, Máximo Antonio González, precisely because of her activism. The current leader of Más Madrid protested against massive membership in the college coinciding with a meeting in which the reform of the internal electoral model was voted on in a fight for control of these professional institutions.

The Secretary of State for Health, Javier Padilla, incorporated her into his cabinet as coordinator of the Care Committee of the Ministry of Health.
