Murcian tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, number two in the world, advanced on his march towards his second consecutive title at the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro by beating Italian Fabio Fognini (86th) on Thursday and qualifying for the quarterfinals.
The 19-year-old Iberian prodigy was surprised by Fognini in the first set (6-7, 5/7), but then managed to turn the game around (6-2, 6-4) played for two hours and 47 minutes in the clay of the main field of the Jockey Club.
His rival on Friday for the ticket to the semifinals will be the winner of the duel between the Serbs Laslo Djere (57th) and Dusan Lajovic (80th), who close the fourth day of the main tennis tournament in South America.
