The 2022 season will welcome the Anglo-Thai back to the starting grid Alexander Albon, ready to compete in the championship at the wheel of Williams. For the 25-year-old this is a return as an official driver to the top series after the last GP held in 2020, the year in which he was chosen by the Red Bull next to Max Verstappen. Subsequently, for the entire duration of 2021, the former Toro Rosso then embarked on a season in DTM, continuing to work with the Anglo-Austrian team exclusively as reserve pilot. However, the experience in Milton Keynes ‘behind the scenes’ has only enriched Albon’s awareness of how F1 is a team sport, and how much hard work is needed to achieve success.
The same driver, in an interview with the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagbladexplained these impressions on the eve of the world championship: “It’s weird to suddenly do all the simulator work in the factory and then travel to the tracks without being able to drive, just look – commented Albon – but that feeling soon disappeared. Feeling that you are still helping the team by making that car faster is always a satisfying feeling. I really felt part of the team and it was nice to hear that all that work was appreciated, and then rewarded by the success of Max. As with the whole team, I was happy with his victory too. In a sense, his success was mine too. He is a natural talent with an incredible instinct – he added – give him a car and he will easily find the limit. Now I’m behind the wheel of a car that has colors similar to those of Red Bull, but everything else is different. It may seem strange to say that I am more complete as a driver after being sidelined for a year, but in that position you have a better understanding of how car development really works. “
