After the emotions of Monza for the excellent performance of Nyck De Vries, called at the last moment to replace Alex Albon, the Williams failed to confirm itself in the qualifications of the Grand Prix of Singapore. Both the returning Anglo-Thai and Nicholas Latifi, for the first time on the track after the news of the non-renewal for 2023, will in fact start from the back of the grid, with the Canadian in twentieth and last position behind his teammate.
Alboncompletely recovered from the appendicitis suffered during the weekend of the Italian GP, commented on the tests on Saturday afternoon: “Today was a difficult qualifying session – has explained – wet conditions usually calm things down, but this track is very hot, as are the tires, so it’s hard to manage. We were pretty tough on the tires and struggled with overheating, as well as downforce, and when the track dries on the wet tires, it’s hard not to slide all over the place. It certainly was a frustrating qualification, but I think our pace in the long run in PL2 was quite reasonable, so we will try to find a way to get back to that pace for the race. I feel as ready as possible for tomorrow, so let’s see what we can do ”.
Not at all satisfied either Nicholas Latifi: “So far we have had problems with rhythm in both dry and wet conditions. This weekend we knew it would be difficult for us as a team as the track is one of the least suited to our package. We were hoping that the rain could make a difference today, as it did in the past. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find the correct sensations and responses that we know are necessary to be competitive in the wet. Excluding the race times, the track is still exciting to drive in both conditions. We will see what tomorrow has in store for us and we will try to take advantage of every opportunity ”.
