Khartoum (Union)
The isolated Sudanese President, Omar Al-Bashir, acknowledged his full responsibility for the coup against the elected government, which was led by the late former Prime Minister Sadiq Al-Mahdi, in June 1989.
Al-Bashir told the judge of the trial of those accused of carrying out the coup held in Khartoum at the hearing yesterday: “I bear full responsibility for what happened on June 30, 1989. I was following the indictment’s attempts to prove this charge by presenting videos and accusing witnesses, listening and enjoying.” He added: “I am an officer in the Sudanese Armed Forces.” I did my duty perfectly.”
He explained that there were no civilians among those who planned and carried out the coup, and that it was a purely military movement, explaining that “the movement to carry out the coup was based on Article 15 of the amended Armed Forces Law of 1965.”
