The outgoing CDU leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer wants a successor with government experience. “The CDU has, like hardly any other party, the claim: We want to govern”, she told the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.
“In the CDU, therefore, a very important point is how someone deals with responsibility.” With a view to this criterion, she particularly emphasized NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet among her successor candidates: “But the actual government experience, you are right, it lies with Armin Laschet.”
They assume, however, that all three candidates have a “desire for responsibility” and “the ability to do so,” said Kramp-Karrenbauer. The presidency candidate Norbert Röttgen has gained government experience as a former environment minister.

Friedrich Merz still had no government office. He was Union faction leader. The decision on the new CDU chairman should be made on Saturday at the party conference.
According to information from the newspaper, Hesse’s Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) is promoting the election of Laschet internally. The “FAZ” quoted him as saying that Laschet could “lead a government and know how to hold a coalition together”. Accordingly, Bouffier had expressed himself in front of around 90 party congress delegates from Hesse. (AFP)
