The celebrations of the World Fighting Day ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) they opened with the screening of the visual poem “Days at the Window”, premiered on Saturday 11 June at Tenute Lombardo di San Cataldo in Sicily, thanks to Aisla (Italian Association of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Taken from the short story published by Il Saggiatore written by the Sicilian author Gabriella Sardo, the video, now online on Youtube, tells with the tones of poetry the dreamlike journey and imagination that Aldo lived through the window of his room, the only element to feel part of a world that flows.
From his bed, Aldo, a Sicilian ex-racer who was diagnosed with ALS, at every awakening he tried to fly beyond the frame of that window, abandoning himself to the long memories of a life, getting lost in his wife’s stories, trying to leave the narrow confines of the his body no longer cooperative with the disease. Marking the moments in his life, the verses of the visual poem accompany the audience on this path, that of a long-distance runner. A race that YES in Sicily – which produces the video – dedicates to Aldo and to the journey with Aisla in opening the initiatives related to the World Day of the fight against ALS which is celebrated every year on 21 June, the day of the solstice so that it is an auspice for a turning point also for the disease.
“I met Aldo when, together with his wife, they came to our house. It was at the beginning of his illness ”, says Davide La Paglia, contact person for Aisla Caltanissetta, friend of the protagonist of the video. “I, even then, had had ALS for several years – he continues – Right from the start, Aldo made himself available to collaborate, help, get involved with our large Aisla family. In sports, everyone knows each other a little, which is why I had already heard of him. We shared not only the pathology but the fact that we were both sportsmen. And sport gives you that extra edge, it trains you, it gives you that discipline and that desire to fight and fight to the point of always wanting to win, with your head held high. As in sport, we also met in life and in this hard path of illness. Today I am happy to be here to honor his memory along with his wonderful family. Thank you Aldo for your availability, your simplicity and for your refined and straightforward way that characterized you “.
Created in synergy with the CGS Don Bosco San Cataldo Theater @ boratorio and Massimo Palmigiano pics & clips, the visual poem contains a curiosity: the running child is Giorgio Falzone, Aldo’s nephew. “We wanted to deal with this theme without ever mentioning the disease – comments the director Giuseppe Palmeri – It was a difficult challenge but one that came spontaneously following the words of Gabriella, whose texts are the subject of the visual poem. We wanted to give her an important role in the clip: Gabriella plays Aldo’s wife, the one who opens the window with Giorgio. The text separates from the script as if to take a form in itself. Opening the window means going further, overcoming the barrier, overturning the schemes. And it is also in this sense that, with Vincenzo Amico, Vitale Vancheri, Massimo Palmigiano and all the friends of Yes in Sicily, we discovered an intense, profound emotionality, creating a visual poem that deeply involved us emotionally “.
“There could not have been a better occasion to start the celebrations of the World Day of the fight against ALS – observe Fulvia Massimelli and Michele La Pusata, respectively president and national vice president of Aisla – Today we experienced great emotions. Days at the Window is a story to get to know and recognize each other. Aldo’s is a race that AISLA will continue to do until, we hope as soon as possible, to turn the page and finally start writing a new one for the history of our disease “.
