A severe storm has hit Mallorca Airport and caused it to be temporarily closed. Air travelers must prepare for delays.
Palma – It is not only in Germany and Austria that the weather has been going crazy recently. A violent storm also swept across the Balearic island of Mallorca. The island’s airport was hit hard and caused chaos. The airport spokeswoman confirmed to the Mallorca Newspaperthat the storm started around 12.30 p.m. As a result, all take-offs and landings had to be suspended for about an hour. Only after this break were some aircraft able to take off again.

Flights to Germany were also affected. According to the German-language Balearen-Zeitung, the first planes to take off again were those to Frankfurt and Berlin. During the temporary closure of the airport, incoming planes were diverted to other airports, including Barcelona and Ibiza. Although flight operations resumed, travelers had to prepare for significant delays into the evening.
The airport in Mallorca was flooded by the storm
From around 1pm to 3pm, Mallorca airport was apparently hit particularly hard by rain. Spain’s Transport Minister Oscar Fuente confirmed via X that more than 45 litres of water per square metre were measured at the airport’s measuring station within an hour. He added that there were peaks of more than 100 litres per square metre in parts of the airport. As a result, the airport’s emergency protocol had to be activated.

The water was knee-deep in a parking lot at times and also penetrated several areas of the terminal. Among other things, rain came through the ceiling in shops at the airport, as videos on social media show. A particularly striking photo from one of the runways shows how the water reached almost to the turbine of a parked aircraft.
