The Airlines Associationassociation of airlines with operations in Spain, confident of closing 2024 with a new historical air traffic recordexceeding the 283 million passengers of last year, the maximum to date.
This is how its president expressed himself, Javier Gandarain a meeting held in Madrid where he noted that the summer season, between April and September, resulted in 9% more passengers than in 2023, for a total of 177 million. There was also an increase in operations of 7.4%, up to 1.2 million commercial flights.
The greatest push comes from boom in intercontinental trafficwhich grew 16% year-on-year and exceeded 16 million travelers, compared to 13.8 the previous year. The intra-European route rose from 97.9 to 107.4 million passengers; and the domestic also grew slightly, from 51.2 to 53.6 million. “There has been a continuation of last summer’s trajectory,” Gándara explained.
Regarding the outlook for the winter season, the ALA data, more updated than those released this Monday by Aena, point to a offer of 137 million seats. They are 3 million more than those indicated by the airport manager, which took its figures at the end of August 31.
Since then, several companies have rescheduled their operations after stopping flying to the Middle East, which would have favored the Spain destination. The airline spokesperson also highlighted the great growth in air cargowhich has transported 20% more merchandise than last year as a result of the increase in traffic in Zaragoza and Madrid.
