Flights between Brazil and Argentina scheduled for next Wednesday, the 24th, were canceled due to a general strike planned in the neighboring country against a bill announced by President Javier Milei. Flights late in the evening on Tuesday, the 23rd, also underwent changes, given that the strike begins at midnight on the 24th and lasts until midnight.
In total, 34 flights were canceled and one had its schedule changed, according to a survey carried out by Estadão. Latam canceled 12 flights and changed one that would leave at 9:20 pm on Wednesday from Guarulhos (SP) to 10:15 pm. Therefore, the flight should arrive in Buenos Aires at 1:30 am on Thursday, when the 24-hour strike should have ended. In the case of Gol, 22 flights were canceled. Azul is not operating routes between the two countries.
The general strike in Argentina was called by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), one of the main trade unions in the country, against a presidential decree and a package of reforms that became known as the “Bus Law”.
Unions oppose changes in labor law that include alternatives to the compensation that workers receive when they are fired, elimination of fines for employers for lack of employee registration and restrictions on strikes in sectors such as health and education, among other measures.
Airlines have released guidance for passengers with scheduled flights.
In a note, Gol informed that all passengers will have their flights rescheduled to other dates and will be able to make the change free of charge, and may request a full refund. The company stated that customers with tickets booked for the day of the strike are already being informed via email and SMS.
The company created extra operations for January 25th and 26th. If in doubt, the customer should contact 0300 115 2121. If the purchase was made with miles, the passenger should contact Smiles on 0300 115 7001 (Smiles or Silver) or 0300 115 7007 ( Diamond Gold).
For Argentine passengers, the contact number is +55 11 3471 2973, with service in Spanish from 8am to 8pm. The company advises customers who purchased tickets through travel agencies to contact their representatives directly.
Latam informed that passengers affected by the strike will be able to change their flight without penalty to a new date within 15 days of the original date or request a refund. The company asks customers to check their flight status on its website.
