Recall feature in Windows 11 has raised concerns among security experts
Security expert Kevin Beaumont said that the new artificial intelligence (AI) feature in Windows 11 is not sufficiently protected from hackers. The expert spoke about this in blog on Medium.
Beaumont explored an AI-based Recall feature that continuously records every PC user’s actions. Thus, the system takes a screenshot of the screen every few seconds and stores the images, displaying them at the request of the computer owner. Recall raised concerns from Kevin Beaumont, who called it dangerous for the user.
According to the specialist, Recall stores confidential user data – passwords, messages, etc. – in text form. Beaumont discovered that the text document was not encrypted and that system administrator rights were not required to access it.
Beaumont said that he was able to create a virus program with which he was able to steal Recall data on a test computer. “They tried to do a bunch of things, but none of them actually work,” a specialist described the work of Microsoft programmers.
According to Beaumont, thanks to the presence of the new feature, hackers will be able to steal confidential user data. The specialist noted that the system “holes” in the OS are so large that “you could fly an airplane through them.”
At the end of May, the head of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk, in his X, advised to disable the new Windows 11 Recall feature. Musk said that the computer tracking the user reminded him of what happened in the TV series “Black Mirror.”
