Infractions were committed in Boca do Acre (AM), Lábrea (AM), Altamira (PA) and São Felix do Xingu (PA); 5,000 hectares were deforested
The AGU (General Attorney’s Office of the Union) reported on Wednesday (9.Oct.2024) that it filed 5 lawsuits to collect R$89 million from individuals and legal entities accused of destroying native vegetation with fires in the Amazon.
The actions of environmental offenders were investigated by inspectors from Ibama (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) in the municipalities of Boca do Acre (AM), Lábrea (AM), Altamira (PA) and São Felix do Xingu (PA) . Around 5,000 hectares were deforested.
In the actions, the AGU asks:
- the freezing of the assets of those accused of the fires;
- the obligation to repair deforested areas;
- the prohibition of commercially exploiting the locations.
The suspension of tax benefits was also requested from the Court.
The proposal of the actions was coordinated by AGU Recupera, the committee responsible for adopting legal measures to protect the environment and the country’s cultural heritage.
Brazil recorded 1,461 fires on Wednesday (9.Oct.2024). The data is from the system BDQueimadas of Inpe (National Institute for Space Research), released this Thursday (10.Oct). The Amazon concentrates the largest portion of occurrences, with 806 – or 55.2%.
Brazil ended the month of August 2024 with the worst number of fires in 14 years. There were 68,635 occurrences – the 5th highest in the historical series, which began in 1998. It was an increase of 144% compared to the same period in 2023.
September had 83,157 fires –the worst month of the year in terms of number of fires so far. Last month was September with greater number of fires since 2010, when 109,030 fires were recorded.
Compared to last year, which recorded 46,498 fire points in September, the increase was 78.74%. Traditionally, this is the month in which the peak of fires is recorded in Brazil, which continues until October.
In October, the country accumulated 11,595 fires. In 2024, there will already be 221,803 such occurrences.
