They maintain that some points are “causing them stress by not knowing which ones to apply and how to do it”
More than 200 agronomists and agricultural technical engineers from Campo de Cartagena met last Thursday, July 7, at the Torre Pacheco City Hall to debate and propose alternatives to certain articles of Law 3/2020, of July 27, of recovery and protection of the Mar Menor and the precautionary measures of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation.
The objective of this conference was, as they indicate, “to analyze the controversial points and others that contradict each other and that are causing us engineers stress by not knowing which one and how to apply them.” This group gives as an example article 42 of Law 2/2020: limitation of the use of organic materials for fertilization. As they point out, “this article prohibits the application of manure between September 15 and October 31, in order to avoid dragging by rain. But he does not make the exception of the greenhouses, where there are still peppers at this time (until the end of September) to later apply manure and plant courgettes (in mid-October). The greenhouses, being protected, are not in danger of leaching due to rains».
Among the issues discussed at the meeting last Thursday, they also discussed the law regarding the placement of plant barriers, which they consider “absurd because there are many cases.” The group of agronomists defends that the fifth point of the precautionary measures “obliges to carry out an analysis of the mineral fertilization in farms of more than 10Ha, including organic crops, when this type of mineral fertilization is not used in these crops, assuming a cost in devices such as suction probes and analysis for the farmer while the conversion to organic farming is discouraged ».
“The Mar Menor Law requires carrying out the nitrogen balance based on the harvest and instead, the precautionary measures establish a maximum production, taken from an obsolete table with outdated productions due to the existence of new, more productive varieties,” they maintain. .
The group reached the conclusion that “a document must be made and delivered to the schools of Agronomists and Agricultural Technicians so that they give it the proper use and claim certain points.” “All engineers criticize that the laws are made by office and tie engineers, and not in the field, and it is impossible or we see it as absurd to comply with certain points,” they add.
During the meeting held on Thursday at the Torre Pacheco Town Hall they also discussed “the uncertainty created by the figure of the agri-environmental operator, claiming that we are advisors (as Law 3/2020 says) and not having to carry out an inspection and sign for later hand it over to the Ecarms.”
