For weeks, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the American Agency NASA believed in the strong probability that an asteroid will hit Earth as early as next year, with no chance of defense. The threat was, however, dismissed, but space agencies have now confessed to the scare.
The 4th of July 2023 was very close to going down in history, and not in a positive way. This is because there was a strong probability that the Earth was “visited” by an asteroid of about 70 meters that would cause some damage. This is what the ESA and NASA planetary defense teams believed for a few “desperate weeks”.

The period of torment began on January 6th, and had as its protagonist the asteroid 2022 AE1 on which it was evaluated about -1.5 probability of collision on the Palermo scale – scale used to determine which monitored asteroids have greater or lesser degree of collision risk – this was the highest rating in more than a decade.
The results of the evaluations also indicated that, despite being discovered with more than a year of difference, in case of an imminent impact confirmation, there would not be enough time to try de-route techniques.
The only option was to follow the asteroid very closely and find the exact point of impact. To make matters worse, the Moon decided to help complicate matters further, by completely preventing any chance of observing the asteroid for a week due to its brightness, ESA said.
It was necessary to wait until the moon was dark enough to see the menacing rock again. The new data obtained with the help of the Schmidt telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory in Almería, Spain, left the team of astronomers relieved.
At the end of it all, it was confirmed that on July 4, 2023, the asteroid will pass within 10 million kilometers of Earth, that is, at a safe distance.
