In these times, people can feel offended by the slightest neglect of their culture.
Age of Empires 4 is based on true story, and as such, people from all over the world identify when their culture or civilization is represented. The 3DJuegos team interviewed the creative director of the game, Adam isgreen, and told us how difficult it can be to develop a game, when anyone could be offended.
People have to think more openly, and we have to think more carefully.Adan Isgreen, Creative Director, Age of Empires 4“It’s a great question, I’m glad you brought that up,” Isgreen mentioned, when we asked him about developing games based on true history. “Today, it feels like everything has to be over-communicated, all to get people to get the message.”
Isgreen reiterated, on the importance of making all intentions very clear when represent nations: “If we are representing something, that will not be the only expression that we are going to deliver in the game. We want to have more civilizations and cultures represented, and since we did not say that there would be more content in the future, people thought that that would be the only representation of their cultures. “
It is not strange to see real history represented in a video game, but the Age of Empires saga goes further, trying to be as exact to the events of the past, as possible. Movies and series go through the same dilemma, where a minimum historical error could end in catastrophe, with people feeling insulted, and demanding (not always peacefully) the necessary changes.
Isgreen mentioned, that the investigation It is one of the biggest challenges when it comes to this franchise. The study talks to the representatives of the countries, and it is very difficult to keep everyone happy. “This taught us that people have to think more openly, and we have to think more carefully.”
