Paddling against the current: that will be the mission of the Mexican National Team in the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The team led by Gerardo Martino was placed in Group C of the World Cup along with Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Poland. The Aztec team has a tough test ahead. The Albiceleste will be measured, a team that has been indigestible in recent years. El Tri will have to seek qualification for the round of 16 against the White Eagles and the Saudi team.
The task for the tricolor team looks complex. But this has been the trend in recent fairs. In 2014, the Mexican National Team was paired with Cameroon, Brazil and Croatia. Mexico looked like a victim and classification seemed almost impossible. The Aztecs beat the Africans, tied against the scratch du oro and in the final match they beat the Croats.
The European team had Luka Modric, Mario Mandzukic, Ivan Perisic, Ivica Olic and Ivan Rakitic. Mexico, with goals from Rafael Márquez, Andrés Guardado and Javier Hernández, won by a score of 1-3.
In 2018 the situation was not very different. The Mexican team was paired with Germany, South Korea and Sweden. The Aztec squad did not look like the favorites to access the round of 16, however, in their first match of the World Cup they surprisingly won against the Germans, who were then the current world champions.
El Tri beat South Korea, a squad that had Son Heung-Min in its ranks, by a score of 1-2. In the third confrontation, the tricolor fell to Sweden by a convincing score of 0-3. The Mexican team qualified for the round of 16 as second place in the group.
Now, as then, the panorama does not look very good for the Mexican National Team. However, the Aztec team tends to grow when the odds are against them. Now, as then, El Tri will have to row against the current to qualify for the next phase. After all, the Aztec team has achieved this feat in the last seven World Cups.
