With 137 votes to 51 in Hungary’s parliament, Katalin Novák, 44, was elected president of the country, becoming the first woman to hold the position. Married and mother of three, Novak is a member of Fides, the conservative party of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and was Minister of Family, Youth and Foreign Affairs of Hungary.
She is known for her pro-life and pro-family stances, having lectured on the policies implemented under the Orbán government that impacted the lives of couples with children.
“Pro-family policies are not an expense, but an investment in the future,” he declared in a 2018 interview. “Having children is the viable way to survive as a society,” Katalin said, adding that it is only centered on the interests of family that can form a strong nation.
In another interview in December last year, Novák rejected accusations that he was a mere puppet to increase Orbán’s power. “Those who say I would just be a puppet in that position degrade not me personally, but women in general. They cannot assume that a woman can be a sovereign civil servant capable of making autonomous decisions,” he said.
In her inaugural speech, Katalin Novák reinforced the female role in her role.
“We women raise children, care for the sick, cook, be in two places at once if need be, earn money, teach, win Nobel prizes and clean windows. We know the power of words, but we know how to be silent and listen when necessary, defending our families with greater courage than men if danger threatens”, said the new head of state, also the youngest in the country’s history.
“It’s because I’m a woman, not in spite of it, that I want to be a good president of Hungary,” she said.
Graduated in Economics at Corvinus University and Law at the University of Szeged, including studies at the University of Paris Nanterre, Novák speaks French, English and German and has served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2001, specializing in the European Union. She recently condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
