BRASILIA (Reuters) – The president of the Superior Electoral Court, Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, said on Monday that the results of security tests carried out on the electronic voting system last week did not show serious incidents.
The public safety tests, however, presented “relevant findings”, situations that do not compromise the system but indicate points in the system that need to be improved, according to the minister.
“These are important attacks, for which we need to find blocking mechanisms, but we only consider as serious what has the potential to change the voter’s vote and none of them have achieved that”, explained Barroso.
The Public Security Test (TPS) of the Electronic Voting System took place between November 22 and 27, with 26 investigators carrying out 29 plans of attack, according to the TSE.
“I say they are ‘good hackers.’ They help us and provide a fundamental service for Electoral Justice. We use the Test in all elections, as a mechanism to improve defenses. Each year, the attacks become more sophisticated, but our defenses are also improved precisely by these attacks that we summon”, said the president of the TSE.
The security of the electronic voting system was criticized by President Jair Bolsonaro, who was pressing for the approval of a bill to allow printed voting. Bolsonaro’s uncompromising defense of the proposal, who even launched personal attacks on members of the electoral court, including Barroso, exposed an institutional crisis.
Tempers calmed down, with the entry into the field of “firemen”. Bolsonaro stopped attacking the electronic voting system after including an Armed Forces representative in the audit process by Barroso.
