The weekend of British Grand Prix is giving a great return to Formula 1, at least as far as television coverage is concerned: after 22 years from the last time, the Circus would in fact be close to a definitive reuse of cameras aimed at the pedals of the riders. The final decision on the reintroduction of this technology from the next rounds will be taken by Formula 1 only after the analyzes and evaluations of the images taken by McLaren’s Lando Norriswhich during PL1 at Silverstone once again gave the emotions of these specific shots.
This type of camera was introduced for the first time in the 1993 Japanese Grand Prix, when on the Suzuka circuit it was the Japanese Ukyo Katayama who provided these new images transmitted by his Tyrrell. These shots represented a real novelty in the 90s, at least until the Belgian GP in 2000, when Pedro de la Rosa was the last to guarantee similar footage from his Arrows. Since then, they have disappeared for the next 22 years, at least until their return with Norris in 2022.
After the test conducted by Alonso last season, which experimented with the cameras installed inside the helmet – and which still guarantee special shots proposed by the international director – the hope is to be able to witness a definitive return of this camera as well. This, at least, is the opinion of Dean LockeDirector of F1 Broadcasting and Media: “This is another in a series of innovations that we have introduced into our broadcasts to bring fans closer to the action – has explained – F1 drivers must complete a series of complex tasks simultaneously at speeds of up to 200mph during a race, and this camera angle, along with innovations like the helmet cam, will help our fans understand what challenges they need to do. be facing inside the car. We are very happy to have this camera on Lando’s car in his home race, and we hope that his fans and all the fans present at Silverstone this weekend will be able to enjoy this unique vision ”.
