Abramovich was one of seven Russian businessmen who were sanctioned by the British government over their country’s attack on Ukraine and for their proximity to President Vladimir Putin.
Canada followed Britain’s lead the next day, announcing that Abramovich and four other people “will be prohibited from doing business with Canada and their assets will be frozen”.
It is rumored that the 55-year-old Russian billionaire owns six yachts and used to sail off Montenegro and neighboring Croatia.
Britain’s sanctions have also targeted Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska.
According to media in Montenegro, the yacht “Sputnik” owned by Deripaska, was seen leaving the port of Porto Montenegro, on Friday. Deripaska’s other yacht, Clio, is often accompanied by “Sputnik”.
Abramovich had announced his intention to sell Chelsea FC before the sanctions, and the British government had expressed its openness to any sale, provided that no profit would go to Russia.
