The Ferrari double
When the Ferrari made the decision to return to the Endurance World Championship with the introduction of hypercars, which was certainly one of the objectives bringing the success of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the premier class back to Maranello. In fact, the Reds had not triumphed in the most famous endurance race since 1965, thanks to the pairing of Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory.
In 2023 it was Alessandro Pier Guidi, Antonio Giovinazzi and James Calado who broke the spell and triumphed at the Circuit de la Sarthe and in 2024 it was the other crew, made up of Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen who gave success to Maranello, for a fairytale double.
The thoughts of Piero Ferrari
In an interview granted to Leo Turrini a National newspaperthe vice president of the Rossa, Piero Ferrari, explained how he experienced the success of the 499P #50: “When I saw that for the second year in a row we had managed to win at Le Mans, well, for a moment I thought of another impossible dream. Sunday afternoon I was glued to the television, I admit that the last hours were tremendously exciting, with a heart-pounding, thrilling ending. The team was excellent in managing emergencies. And let’s not forget the drivers, driving without making mistakes for 24 hours, between day and night, between sun and rain, is not for everyone.”
Piero Ferrari then said: “Eh, when John Elkann told me he wanted to return to the 24 Hours in the top category, with the Hypercar, I encouraged him. It is a far-sighted choice”, and concluded with a – at the moment – impossible wish: “In the racing world there is something called the Triple Crown (Monte Carlo, Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500, ed.). We at Ferrari are missing onlyor the last link in the chain, Indy. But it’s a dream, there aren’t the technical conditions to make it happen. My father often thought about it, but apart from an unfortunate attempt with Ciccio Ascari in the early 1950s nothing came of it. But who knows…”.
