The ZDF “summer interview” with the Greens boss Robert Habeck made waves in the social networks. Journalist Shakuntala Banerjee explains her approach.
Berlin – The ZDF summer interviews as part of the political program “Berlin direkt” have long been a tradition. High-ranking politicians from the various parties are invited for talks. Especially in the election year, the journalists involved hope to be able to elicit spicy information from their counterparts.
On Sunday, August 8th, the Greens federal chairman Robert Habeck found himself in the ZDF summer interview with journalist Shakuntala Banerjee. The supporter of the Green Chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock was cross-examined. The 51-year-old was almost unable to take a breather. Banerjee now has to justify her style of interviewing – and gives her point of view on Twitter.
ZDF summer interview with Robert Habeck is controversial – journalist Shakuntala Banerjee comments on Twitter
When Habeck wanted to skilfully move from one subject to the next, Banerjee persisted. The Green Party politician was not always able to finish, not always what it allowed him to decorate his remarks in great detail. A fact that has led to a lot of criticism on social media. Now the ZDF journalist uses her chance and explains her approach via Twitter.
Because there are so many different impressions from my interview with Robert Habeck, a lot of criticism and many questions, an attempt to answer the most common ones in a bundle. Sorry, in advance that it will be very long because of this. 1/15

Banerjee defends, among other things, her multiple slips in between in the statements of Habeck. In her opinion, this is indispensable in a critical interview – after all, the aim is “to concentrate on working on unpleasant questions that the guest would like to avoid. If the guest evades questions, I have to bring him back to the core in a friendly, but firm manner ”. Otherwise only “pleasant questions would be answered” and “unpleasant ones would be navigated with evasive maneuvers”.
ZDF wants to show a variety of topics: Climate protection is neglected in the summer interview with Robert Habeck
In addition, Banerjee does not want to leave the accusation that she only asked superficial questions. She admits that “questions about personnel issues” can be argued. However, especially with the Greens, it can be seen “that staff and personality have tangible effects, in this case on the chance to change the country from the top.”

Last but not least, Habeck’s interlocutor goes into the topic of climate protection. This took place only marginally in the context of the ZDF summer interview. “Do we only want to talk about one topic in large interviews? Which would it be? The one that the polled party thinks is most important? Or the competition? ”Is what Banerjee says in this context.
The ZDF journalist points out that climate change is already being dealt with “in many places in the ZDF program”. In addition, it is important to map other topics as well. Banerjee mentions “Corona, social scissors, education, intergenerational justice, migration” as an example.
Banerjee did not want to absolve themselves of any criticism: “All that does not mean that my interview does not deserve criticism. You decide whether it was well or badly managed according to journalistic-technical criteria or according to taste. “
