Asked to assess whether there are elements to denounce Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) for alleged Odebrecht bribery, as the Lava Jato whistle-blowers pointed out, the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) informed the Federal Supreme Court (STF) on Monday. fair, 18, which is gathering additional information to issue its opinion. Minister Edson Fachin, rapporteur of the case, had given 15 days for the PGR to present a “conclusive statement” in the inquiry.
In July, the Federal Police indicted Renan Calheiros for passive corruption and money laundering. The senator was accused of receiving R$ 1 million from the contractor as a “counterpart” for political support for the approval of a resolution that restricted tax incentives to imported products, benefiting Braskem, the petrochemical arm of the Odebrecht Group.
The Deputy Attorney General of the Republic Lindôra Araújo asked the Federal Senate to share all information about the resolution’s processing, including possible parliamentary amendments, justifications and votes by Renan Calheiros. It also demanded that the Legislative Police register the entries and exits of Milton Lyra, appointed as payment operator, to determine whether there were any meetings with the emedebist.
The PGR argues that the data is important to establish the “legal outline” of the facts. “This entire context contributes to the delineation of the participation of the investigated in the approval of the legislative act, and, if any, amendments aimed at benefiting business interests”, writes Lindôra.
Although the PF has concluded the investigation, the case has been stalled for almost two months, since the PGR asked the Supreme Court to annul the indictment of the senator. The argument is that the competence to conduct investigations that reach authorities with privileged jurisdiction, including the promotion of their indictment, is exclusive to the Attorney General’s Office. The agency also asked for an investigation to verify whether the delegate Vinicius Venturini, responsible for the investigation, committed abuse of authority.
Renan Calheiros denies the accusations and attributes the indictment to an act of “political persecution” for his work on the Covid CPI report, which investigates the management of the pandemic. When the senator was indicted, in July, lawyer Luís Henrique Machado, who represents the emedebist, said that his life was “examined” and that “any sign of illegality was never found”.
