Hegazy wrote on Instagram Stories: “I was excluded from the Egypt national team camp by the technical director, and I did not apologize for not continuing.”
He added: “In response to yesterday’s match situation, I also did not apologize for not participating, and the argument was a reaction to words made by one of the members of the technical director’s assistant staff, in plain sight and hearing of everyone.”
He added: “Over the course of 13 years in the national team and playing 100 international matches, I have never made any negative gesture, and the interest of the national team is always more important to me than anything else. I wish the national team success.”

- Hossam Hassan said in the press conference after the match: “I have confidence in Hegazy, but preparing the attack from the back requires the presence of Hamdi Fathy, who played in this position before and can prepare well from the back and has speed, as does Rami Rabia.”
- He explained: “Cape Verde’s defence monitoring of Mohamed Salah gave freedom to Mohamed Hani and Ahmed Mostafa Zizo to advance and they exploited that in a good way.”
- He added: “Ahmed Hegazy is the first captain of the Egyptian national team alongside Mohamed Salah, but any player would be sad about not participating. I don’t want to dwell on this matter. I felt that he was not psychologically prepared to participate and was performing in a way that was not good and not beneficial to him or the team.”
The Egyptian national team defeated Cape Verde, on Friday, 3-0 at Cairo Stadium in the first round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Egyptian national team is preparing to face Botswana in the second round next Tuesday.
The Egyptian team topped the group that also includes Mauritania and Botswana, and the two teams have not played their match yet.
For the first time, the Egyptian national team scored 3 goals or more in a single match since defeating Djibouti last November 6-0, in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
