The images that have been arriving from Afghanistan for days, since the Taliban regained power in the country, setting the clock of history back 20 years are dramatic. In particular, the most vulnerable people, women and children, are at risk of paying the worst consequences, with many Afghans who are trying everything to leave the country.
Among the terrible videos circulating in these hours, however, there is one that has gone viral and that however has nothing to do with what is happening in Afghanistan. The film shows the cold execution of a woman, who is killed with a blow to the head. The video, however, is not from these days, but dates back to six years ago, to be precise in January 2015. The journalist noticed the hoax and did a careful work of fact-checking. Laura Silvia Battaglia, as you can read in his Facebook post.
Not only. The execution took place neither in Afghanistan nor at the hands of the Taliban. This does not mean, mind you, that the Taliban are not capable of even worse actions, but it is right to report the facts clearly. Specifically, the video is from January 13, 2015. We are therefore in the middle of winter and not in summer.
The theater of execution, Battaglia explains in his post, is Syria. Speakers do so in classical Arabic fusha for the recitation of the Koran, in Syrian accent for the rest of the speech. The militiamen seen in the video are therefore not the Afghan Taliban but the jihaddists of the Al Nusra Qaedist front. Their name (written in Arabic) can be found on the wall behind the poor victim, a woman executed for adultery.
The inscription reads: تنظيم قاعدة الجهاد في بلاد الشام جبهة النصر which means: Al Qaeda Organization of the Levant Al Nusra Front. In the dramatic video, the performers after the recitation of the Fathia (the Islamic profession of faith) pronounce the sentence. The woman is defined as a “prostitute” for having committed the crime of adultery. The victim, the journalist says, is a native of Marrat Msren, in the countryside of Idlib. The video, dating back to 2015, became popular for the first time when it was released by activists of the group “Raqqa is being slaughtered silently”, which for years denounced the progressive penetration of the Qaedists and then of Daesh in Raqqa.
