The Imam-Bargah Mosque, the largest temple of the Shiite minority in Kandahar, was hit by an explosion as hundreds of worshipers gathered for the big weekly prayer on Friday. Authorities confirm at least 32 people dead and 53 injured.
During the great prayer on Friday and while hundreds of worshipers of the Shiite minority were gathered in the Imam-Bargah mosque, in the city of Kandahar, a deadly attack with explosives took place that so far has left 32 people dead.
“So far, 32 dead and 53 injured have been transferred to our hospital,” a spokesman for Kandahar Central Hospital told AFP, who asked not to be named.
On the other hand, a spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior, Qari Saeed Khosty, confirmed to EFE that “unfortunately, there was an explosion inside a mosque of the Shiite brothers” in Kandahar, which caused several casualties among “compatriots.”
Taliban units arrived in the area of the attack “to determine the nature of the attack and other details, and to also bring the culprits to justice,” Khosty added.
The attack on October 15 is recorded a week after another bloody attack in Kunduz, claimed by the Islamic State group, which left more than 80 people dead.
