The man and woman were executed, in public, by local officials and on the orders of a Taliban commander from Nasai province.
A man and a woman have been stoned to death in the Nasai district, in the Afghan province of Badakhshan, for maintaining “illegitimate relations”, according to the local press.
The man and woman were executed, in public, on Monday by local officials and on the orders of a Taliban commander in the province. Two Taliban from Badajshan confirmed on Wednesday the execution of the alleged couple to the DPA news agency and specified that an Islamic court had sentenced them for having an “illegal relationship” under Sharia or Islamic law. “They have confessed that they have had illegal relations and that they have done it between two and three times,” they have detailed.
The head of the Department of Information and Culture of Badakhshan province, Muezudin Ahmadi, has indicated that the matter is already being investigated and has promised to act against the perpetrators of the stoning.
Muslim men and women are not allowed to have sex outside of marriage, according to Sharia law. Islamic law also says that if a married man has sex with a married woman and there are four witnesses to the relationship, the couple can be stoned.
Despite promises to respect human rights, lower-ranking Taliban officials have meted out harsh punishments to the population since they seized power in August.
