It has been known for some time that Sonyas well as Apple And Xiaomiwould enter the world of production of electric cars. Now there is the official confirmation and after the agreement with Honda the new automotive brand is born Afeelato launch an electric vehicle expected on the market by 2025.
Sony Afeela electric car
Sony and Honda have entered into an agreement to produce Afeelaarevolutionary electric car, especially from a technological point of view. The Afeela heads straight for the autonomous driving and for this reason it is equipped with 45 sensors and cameraspositioned outside and inside the car.
The prototype expresses Afeela's vision of creating a new relationship between people and mobility. Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) will develop the production model based on this prototype and plans to start taking pre-orders in first half of 2025.
During the CES 2024a car was presented on stage at a press conference, remotely controlled by the CEO of the joint venture Yasuhide Mizunowho guided her using the PlayStation 5 controller.
Sony Afeela dimensions, features
The Afeela, Sony's electric car, is 4,915mm long, 1,900mm wide and 1,460mm high, with a wheelbase of 3 metres. The exterior design aims to create new standards of value for mobility. The exterior is equipped with “Media Bar” which allows the car to to communicate with surrounding people using light.
The interior of the car features a design sweet and rounded which envelops the occupants in a welcoming environment. The focus was on simplicity, minimizing distracting ornaments and colors. The interiors also provide screens of different sizeswith one in front of the driver who can take advantage of the augmented reality to transform and offer dynamic information.
Motor, battery and charging
The Sony Afeela is technically equipped with two electric motors with permanent magnets, one per axis, from 180 kW (equivalent to 245 HP) each, offering all-wheel drive from 490 HP. It uses double wishbone suspension at the front and multi-link at the rear. Its lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 91 kWh and supports DC charging up to 150 kW.
The car is also equipped with alloy wheels and sized tyres 245/40 R21 for the front axle e 275/35 R22 for the rear one. The air suspension features a configuration double wishbone at the front and a system multi-link at the rear.
Sony Afeela autonomous driving
Sony Afeela's goal is to achieve the level 3 autonomous driving in limited conditions and enable driving assistance level 2+ in an even greater number of situations, such as urban driving.
To achieve this, the 45 total cameras can rely on the software Qualcomm Snapdragon Digital Chassis SoCfor maximum hardware processing performance of 800 terabytes per second.
The Afeela software uses the latest version ofEpic's Unreal Engine for physics simulation and graphics. It also offers an open platform to allow other developers to create automotive applications and services, although how user data and privacy protection will be managed remains to be defined.
Finally, SMH has entered into an agreement with Microsoft to develop a conversational bot similar to ChatGPT by OpenAI And Goka of Tesla, which will be based on Microsoft Azure's OpenAI services.
Sony agreement with Honda
In developing this revolutionary electric car, the two companies made very clear agreements. On the one hand there is Hondalong-time leader in the Automotive sector, on the other there is Sony which made history in the electronics sector.
Honda will collaborate in the development of the electric car above all from the point of view logistics and of production. In fact, it will take care of assembly, sales and after-sales services, having the means and infrastructure that Sony does not have.
When it arrives?
The first electric car produced by Sony and Honda under the brand Afeela arrives during the 2025with first deliveries expected in North America in early 2026.
On thepriceWe don't yet have precise details about the Sony Car, but given the large technological load on board it won't be low. Remaining in the field of hypotheses it could touch on 100,000 euros.
