The election of a state parliament president is usually a calm affair. But on Thursday, the inaugural session in the Erfurt state parliament is likely to be turbulent. The election will be a showdown between the AfD and its chairman Björn Höcke and the other parties. The CDU has nominated MP Thadäus König to run against the AfD. The 42-year-old political scientist and father of two children from the predominantly Catholic Eichsfeld region is deputy state chairman. He won his direct mandate in the state election with 54.3 percent, thus achieving the best result in Thuringia. He managed to do this four years ago, when he lost to Höcke.
