From July on new cars comes the black box mandatory. The devicestrongly desired byEuropemust also be installed on vans, trucks and buses and serves to record a series of vehicle parameters to be used in case of accident. Newly homologated cars must be equipped with other ADAS safety systems such as Intelligent Speed Adaptation And Alcoholock interfacethe device that prevents the engine from starting if the driver has a alcohol level higher than allowed.
ADAS self mandatory from July
From July 2022 on newly homologated cars they must be compulsorily present 15 types of ADAS systems. You go speed limiter at the camera for turning maneuvers.
Below are all the safety systems that must be present on newly homologated cars and which from July 2024 must also be present on newly registered vehicles:
- Smart speed limiter
- Lane Keeping Assistant (LKA)
- Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
- Loss of attention and drowsiness detection of the driver
- Driver distraction detection
- Starting block with breathalyser
- Accident recording system (black box)
- Flashing emergency stop lights
- Reversing camera or warning systems
- Improvement of seat belts
- Expansion of the pedestrian impact zone in crash tests
- Pole crash test
Mandatory black box
The European regulation 2019/2144 introduces safety systems such as the black box on newly homologated cars. The main innovations are planned for the newly homologated cars starting from July 6, 2022but which will be mandatory on newly registered cars only from July 7, 2024.
The black box on cars from Europe has been defined “Event data recorder” (Event data recorder). And it is similar to that found on airplanes, which records a series of parameters to be used in the event of an accident.
Mandatory black box, when?
The black box will be mandatory on new cars registered from 7 July 2024while from 6 July 2022 it will be on those of new type approval.
For the heavy vehiclesboth for the transport of people and for the transport of things, the ban takes effect January 7, 2029. On the other hand, there is no obligation for cars already in circulation.
Mandatory black box, how does it work?
How does the mandatory black box work? This device, as specified in the standard, is protected from manipulation and abuse and records the speed, braking, position and inclination of the vehicle with respect to the road, the status and frequency of activation of all ADAS systems safety on board the car.
All these data will be recorded and stored over a period of time included in the Previous 30 seconds the impact and in the 5 subsequent seconds to an accident.
The recorded data is protected for the privacy, therefore no element is memorized that can allow to identify the single vehicle or the owner or holder of the vehicle. The information collected is therefore available to national authoritiesonly for the purposes of research and analysis in relation to the incident.
Speed limiter warning
The European standard, in addition to the mandatory black box, also introduces (with the same timing) Intelligent Speed Adaptation (Intelligent speed assistance ISA), a device that helps the driver to maintain most appropriate speed to the road environment.
More precisely, it is a system that warns the driver when the speed limit is exceeded, similar to that already present on many new generation cars.
The driver in this case can also choose to deactivate itbut he will have to do it every time he starts the car for the device to will activate automatically.
Alcoltest by car
The European Regulation also introduces another device called Alcolockthat is a alcoltest which prevents the engine from starting if the driver has a blood alcohol level higher than the permitted one.
Such a device though it’s not mandatorybut on new cars sold since July 7, 2024 there must be there predisposition for a later installation of the Alcoholock.
