Top swimmer Adam Peaty has announced that he is taking a break after his successful performance at the Tokyo Olympics. The Briton says he needs to recover mentally from the enormous efforts he has had to make. “The pressure was immense.”
He won gold in the 100m breaststroke by beating the Dutchman Arno Kamminga. In the 4×100 meters for mixed teams there was also the main prize, he won silver in the 4×100 meters medley in the men.
“We have recently seen several athletes collapse under the pressure,” said the 26-year-old swimmer. “I want to prevent that. For seven years I have had no more than two weeks of vacation a year. That’s going to break you. It is not a normal job that we have as top athletes.”
Peaty will now focus primarily on next year’s major championships.
Gymnast Simone Biles, tennis player Naomi Osaka and swimmer Simone Manuel have previously indicated that they are struggling with mental problems. Biles withdrew from these Olympics for many parts. Today it was announced that the American will take action on the beam.
