The state of California notified that on March 30, 2024, Activision Blizzard will lay off 899 employees in different locations. This is part of the 1,900 layoffs announced by Microsoft in recent weeks in the video game sector, therefore no new jobs cut, as also confirmed by journalist Tom Warren.
However, we now know precisely how many Activision Blizzard employees are affected by the wave of Xbox layoffs and when they will actually be removed from the company, which does not make the data any less impressive or dramatic.
Flurry of layoffs
January 25th Microsoft announced that it had fired 1,900 people in its gaming division, the one headed by Phil Spencer. The cuts affected all groups in the division, with Activision Blizzard being the hardest hit. Many expected this to happen post-acquisition. There were also those who predicted the amount of people who would be turned away.
The reasons for the cuts are multiple, including redundancies caused by the overlapping of the two companies, to the post-COVID period which has taken its toll on all the reckless, sometimes irresponsible, tech companies.
