The Unshakable Democracy ceremony, held on the afternoon of this Monday (8), brought together the main authorities of the Republic in celebrating one year of resistance against the frustrated coup attempt. It was exactly on January 8, 2023 that an extremist group invaded the headquarters of the Three Powers, in Brasília.
The event that recalled the attack and the resistance of the institutions took place in the Black Room of the National Congress, located between the plenary chambers of the Chamber and the Senate. The event brought together around 12 state governors, ministers and authorities from all powers, including foreign diplomats.

In addition to the blunt speeches of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other heads of powers, including the presidents of the Senate, Rodrigo Pachecoand the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, other authorities present reinforced the importance of the date.
“It is a historic event because it shows the strength of Brazilian democracy, institutions, the union of Powers in complying with the Constitution”, highlighted vice-president Geraldo Alckmin.
“I think today's act was highly representative, of all segments of Brazilian politics, within the government, the other powers, all the leaders were here”, observed the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino. In the coming weeks, he will take over the position of minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
Also according to Dino, the ceremony is important as a platform for dialogue between the powers and with society, and mentioned the need for clearer electoral rules that prevent acts of violence resulting from the results of the polls.
During your speech, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF, had already emphasized that “fraudulent premeditated disinformation” increased hateful and anti-democratic speeches. He demanded regulation of platforms and social networks that moderate and disseminate content on the internet.
Ricardo Cappelli, executive secretary of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, was also present and stated that he believes in strengthening democracy after the attacks that completed one year this Monday.
“I think Brazilian democracy was severely tested and came out stronger. Today is a day to celebrate stronger, more united institutions and reinvigorated democracy”, he highlighted. Cappelli acted as an intervenor at Public Security in the Federal District in the months that followed the coup attempt. He also stated that he believes in the Federal Police's investigative work to reach the mentors and financiers of the acts. These people have not yet been reached.
Manuella Mirella, president of the National Union of Students (UNE), supported the punishment of the financiers and promoters of the attempted coup d'état. “We cannot ignore [o que aconteceu]. We fight for memory, for truth and, above all, for justice. We want the arrest of Bolsonaro, who incited the great acts of January 8th, but also of those who financed these coup acts, so that we can have justice and be able to write a new page in our history”, he stated.
