Acosta once again gets on the podium in the Jérez sprint to place second in the drivers' world championship. The driver from Mazarrón took advantage of a festival of falls in front of him to take second place after an untouchable Jorge Martín. The third in the test was the Frenchman Fabio Quartararo, who brings joy to Yamaha when the Japanese brand is not going through its best moment, after a fight with Dani Pedrosa.
The engine returned to the historic Jérez – Ángel Nieto circuit for another year. Acosta, after a fall in the classification, started tenth at the start of the sprint race, led by Marc Márquez with his 93rd pole. The start was clean, with many position changes at the head of the race, and with a Pedro Acosta who gained a position. At the end of the first lap, Mazarrón was already eighth and eager for more.
The pavement, somewhat wet after this morning's rain, played tricks on some drivers like Aleix Espargaró and Jack Miller. Two-time world champion Pecco Bagnaia also crashed after being beaten by South African Binder. A fact that earned Acosta seventh place and immediately after finishing off Marco Bezzecchi to gain another position.
He tried it with Bastianini but the Italian returned the play shortly after and settled in sixth position, closing the chasing group. Martin and Márquez were doing their thing, while Álex Márquez, Brad Binder, Enea Bastianini and Pedro Acosta were fighting for the last place on the podium.
Up to 14 drivers crashed throughout the sprint race, but the surreal thing was at the end when turn five became the executioner for many drivers. With four laps remaining, Álex Márquez, Binder and Bastianini went into the gravel at the same moment, and shortly after, the eldest of the Márquezs, when lapping first, went to the ground. This caused the Tiburón de Mazarrón to place second without having to overtake any motorcycle.
Acosta knew that catching Martín was almost impossible, and any failure would bring him to the same end as his companions. So, the GasGas pilot tried not to make any mistakes so as not to catch a patch of water. Behind him, the battle was outside his rearview mirrors. Quartararo, who started in 23rd place, gave the surprise and landed on an unreal podium for a Yamaha that is not going through its best moment, after a fight with Dani Pedrosa, who took advantage, and in what way, of the invitation to race in the home circuit and finished fourth in the sprint.
