Champion mentality
“In Portugal I actually would have finished fourth, so performance-wise I didn't get on the podium. I'm going to try to get on it for real here in Texas.” Pedro Acosta he finished the Portuguese Grand Prix in Portimao in third place thanks to the technical knockout of Maverick Vinales on the last lap and therefore does not actually believe he has already achieved his first MotoGP podium.
A champion's mentality which says a lot about the level of awareness with which the two-time world champion has arrived in the premier class. Acosta knows well what she needs to improve to put the top-3 in her sights: “I have to qualify in the first two rows, because otherwise you risk losing too much ground in the first laps. It's true that you can then catch up, but if at a certain point he finds himself 2-3 seconds behind the leader, even if he turns as fast as he does, that margin now makes him unattainable.”
A year ago Acosta won in Moto2 by beating Tony Arbolino in a nice duel that ended on the last lap. The driver from Murcia believes that the RC-16 can perform well at COTA judging from Miller's race a year ago: “Jack was doing well, then he crashed. We need to see how the bike behaves on the bumps, how the new asphalt is and then there will be a lot of wind. Finish ahead of the other KTMs? It doesn't have much value, it's not like you get anything. I'm certainly not going to start throwing rockets to celebrate having finished ahead of the KTMs, it's not worth a medal. I have to stay calm and continue to learn from them.”.
