Accidents | When Mariette Hägglund’s parachute didn’t open, she had to improvise – Video shows an emergency landing in the middle of boulders

Mariette Hägglund got into a terrible situation during a skydive when her parachute got stuck. However, he survived the situation with only minor bruises.

When Mariette Hägglund was doing a routine parachute jump from four kilometers last Saturday, he noticed that the parachute did not open as usual.

Hägglund says that the series of events started when the auxiliary umbrella that opens the main umbrella did not work as it was supposed to.

“When I went to open the shade, I noticed that it just hung at the back and didn’t open. This auxiliary umbrella, which you throw out, should open the main umbrella, but it somehow got into a mess, and then it couldn’t open the main umbrella,” explains Hägglund.

Hägglund released a video of what appeared to be a dangerous situation on his Twitter account. The event was previously reported on, among other things Evening newspaper.

Spare umbrella according to Hägglund, opening is a backup measure that every parachutist learns from their apprenticeship.

“Using a spare parachute is not a big event in itself. But instead of that, you have to land in a difficult place and possibly get injured, of course it can be.”

Hägglund is an experienced skydiver. He says that he has been practicing the sport for about three years and that he has already jumped more than 270 times.

Hägglund says that he has already parachuted more than 270 times.

Spare umbrella after opening correctly, Hägglund started looking for a landing spot.

“There was no actual landing area for those taking off. At that point, my options were either the forest, the road or the logging site, and from above this logging site looked like a good area,” Hägglund says.

“Then, when I got closer and closer, I noticed boulders and tree trunks. At that point, however, I could no longer change the plan.”

Hägglund says that he was excited about the descent. However, he feels that focusing on the landing distracted from the bigger fear.

“Yes, it was exciting, but at the same time you had to concentrate so much that you didn’t have time to be afraid. I did dare to think about what would happen to my feet. You also had to be mentally prepared that it could hurt and get hit. However, most of the energy went into focusing on what was being done.”

Situation was, according to Hägglund, relatively rare. He says that many fellow skydivers have resorted to using a reserve parachute. However, Hägglund estimates that this only happens about once per 500 jumps.

“You can get into this kind of situation if, for example, you have carelessly packed the shadows. Most likely, either the auxiliary umbrella has become crumpled and tangled when I threw it or already during packing.”

In the end, Hägglund managed to land without major injuries. He says that he takes the situation in terms of learning.

“There was a small wound on the knee and a hole in the pants, but nothing more serious. I just jumped up from it and gave the location to my friends, where they can come and pick it up by car”, Hägglund laughs.

Hägglund did not experience fear even after the incident. He says that he will be back at the height of kilometers again soon.

“I went jumping a couple of times after that, so I’ve just taken this as a learning experience so that I can do better next time.”
