Restaurant ferry Ocean Bar sank in Kotka’s Main Harbor the night before Saturday. The observation was made by a passer-by on Saturday morning.

On-call firefighter Juha Säämänen The Kymenlaakso Rescue Department told HS that only the highest deck structures were visible from the 12-meter-high raft.

According to Säämänen, the accident site, located less than half a kilometer from the marine center Vellamo, has attracted curious people, even though the rescue service has isolated the area.

“It’s a tourist trap. People go through the tapes. The place is dangerous, it is not worth going there. If the ferry happens to spin, there is a risk of it falling under the ice. ”

Sinking the cause was still covered in dusk on Saturday day. According to Säämänen, however, the ferry has been in poor condition and tilted, and there have been leaks in its pontoons.

The Rescue Department has decided not to dive into the ice. It is not known to the weatherman that there was anyone on the ferry at the time of the sinking.

Previously The restaurant ferry operated in Hakaniemenranta, Helsinki, from where it had to leave in 2019 due to a missing building permit. The ferry continued to operate in Kotka in the summer of 2020.

In February, the Kymenlaakso District Court sentenced the CEO of, among other things, the CEO of a restaurant ferry to 60 days in prison. According to the prosecutor, the company had acted in violation of the Waste Act by discharging wastewater into the sea. The verdict is not yet final and can be appealed.
