Minesweeper ran aground on Wednesday evening in the Archipelago Sea, says Merivoimat in a press release. According to the release, the minesweeper Pyhäranta ran aground at 18:30 west of Örö in connection with the firing exercise of the Coastal Navy.
According to the Navy, the accident happened when a minesweeper was lifting a floating target device related to ammunition from the sea. In connection with the grounding, the ship’s bow was damaged, which resulted in small water leaks in the bow space. However, the ship’s personnel managed to plug the leaks.
The ship’s condition is stable, and no personal or environmental damage was caused by the accident, says Merivoimat. The ship’s personnel have not had to be evacuated, and no oil has leaked from the ship into the sea.
To the press release according to the Navy divers will check the external subsurface parts of the ship during Wednesday evening, after which the ship will prepare to detach from the bottom. There are other Navy ships in the area, in addition to which the Coastal Navy’s oil spill prevention ship Halli and the Border Guard’s outer patrol ship Tursas will support the operation if necessary and ensure that the ship’s detachment does not result in environmental damage.
More information about what happened will be announced on Thursday morning.
