Accidents A ship carrying 60 people sank in Lebanon

The fate of the passengers is not yet certain.

Red according to the cross, a ship carrying 60 passengers has sunk off the coast of Lebanon. Their fate is uncertain so far, news agencies say.

There is also no certainty as to whether those on board attempted to travel illegally. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), some 1,500 people left or tried to leave Lebanon illegally by sea last year. Many hoped to get to Cyprus, a member of the European Union.

Most of those who left through Lebanon are refugees from Syria, but there have also been Lebanese among them. Lebanon has suffered severe economic difficulties.
