The side of the passenger car was left with a mark from the bear’s bump. Mother and bear cub continued their journey.

A passenger car the driver ran into a bear on Saturday a little before noon in Ilomantsi in North Karelia.

The motorist was driving along Naarvantie when a mother bear and a bear cub came onto the road from the forest.

The mother bear hit the side of the car. The car was damaged, but the driver escaped unhurt.

Inspector Sami Joutjärvi The situation center of the Eastern Finland Police Department says that the police asked the local big game department to find out about the condition of the bear.

“They estimate that the bear is in such a condition that it can be left in the wild to continue its bear life. Although the bear has not been found, the signs do not point to serious injuries, as it has been able to move independently,” says Joutjärvi.

in North Karelia is the busiest bear population in the country. Therefore, it is not unusual for a motorist and a bear to meet.

“This is not an exceptional case. Similar situations occur several times a year in North Karelia, where there are wilderness areas and bear populations. Riistavirkaavu has good resources to take care of these situations, they have handlers and dogs that know how to do it,” says Joutjärvi.

If the bear is injured, it is necessary to assess how close it moves to the settlement.

“Then it will be determined whether the situation poses a possible danger to people and whether the injured bear needs to be euthanized. Neither of the mentioned situations came into question in this case,” says Joutjärvi.
