Mandatory masks in schools, nightclubs will close when the incidence reaches 350 cases and sporting or cultural events will be restricted to 50%
The German authorities have reported this Saturday of another 64,510 infections in the last day, after exceeding the six million total affected since the start of the pandemic the day before. According to data from the Robert Koch Institute, the government body in charge of controlling infectious diseases, the total number of infected has reached 6,116,070, of which 102,946 have lost their lives, 378 since Friday.
In this sense, the incidence rate already reached 442.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants during the last week, with a total of 368,123 cases during the last seven days.
Given the situation, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, announced on Thursday a battery of new restrictions to face the spike in infections that the country is experiencing, among which the prohibition of access to shops and restaurants, cultural events and leisure activities stands out. to those people who are not vaccinated. Merkel reported the new restrictions after a meeting between state and federal authorities, where it has been decided that the so-called 2G standard, which is already in force in some states, is applied at the national level.
On the other hand, the authorities have also decided that the masks will be mandatory in all schools, while the discos will be closed when the incidence in seven days reaches 350 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Likewise, the number of participants in sporting, cultural and other major events will be restricted to a maximum of 30 or 50% of the capacity.
More restrictions
Despite restrictions at the federal level announced by Merkel on Friday, some states have already announced that they will further toughen measures to deal with the fourth wave of coronavirus. In the case of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, in the southwest of the country, a negative test for covid-19 must be presented in restaurants even if customers are vaccinated or have recovered from the disease. This measure will take effect on Saturday, when the capacity will also be limited in large concentrations, such as in football matches, which can only be attended by 750 people.
Lower Saxony has also introduced this “vaccine plus proof” system for almost all spheres of public life, as well as more restrictive capacity limitations. In the case of North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous state in Germany, the authorities have indicated this Friday that they will adhere to the national regulations, which will take effect this Saturday.
The resurgence of the pandemic has materialized this Friday with the death of 18 people in a nursing home in the state of Thuringia, among which 14 did not have any of the doses of the vaccines. According to the DPA news agency, apparently the residents’ relatives had advised them not to get vaccinated.
