About 200 caravans take Palma against the prohibition of PP and Vox to live in them in the absence of housing

Some 200 caravans have taken the streets of Palma to raise their voices against the new ordinance of civic coexistence initially approved on January 30 by PP and Vox, which plans to fine, with sanctions between 750 and 1,500 euros, to whom they use the motorhom As homes, despite the fact that many of those who sleep in these vehicles are workers who spend the night in them in the face of high real estate market prices, crossed for years by speculation, the voracity of investment funds and the illegal tourist offer, what that prevents them from accessing a decent home to live.

Those affected, convened by the Association of Caravaning Oasis (ACO) and the Autonomous Autonomous Platform (PACA), have traveled the main streets of the Balearic capital, guarded by the National and Local Police, to protest against regulations that prevents them from spending the night in The only place they can afford. Making their speakers rumble, vehicles have noticed their presence with banners that prayed, among other messages, ‘parking is not camping. Regulate yes, prohibit no ‘.

The massive march of caravans has caused the collapse of the main arteries of the city and has led the authorities to carry out traffic cuts and divert the circulation to surrounding streets. The protest has had the authorization of the Government Delegation.

Before the march, the president of ACO, Javier Fuster, has criticized that the new ordinance is “discriminatory” and “arbitrary to the law”, given that “violates the rights of caravanists.” Fuster has asserted that in this case it is motorhomes, “a vehicle approved by the European and Spanish industry” and that “it has rights as a housing vehicle,” he recalled. “They cannot prohibit us from being the time we want within our vehicles,” he said, “even less,” he added, when there are three “hot points” in the city of people who live in motorhomes because “they cannot access the Housing for high rental prices. ” In addition, he clarified that those who spend the night in these vehicles due to the lack of housing do not defend “the camping in public roads or incivism.”

Inhabiting concrete is not, however, a new phenomenon, but has become an increasingly widespread housing alternative in the archipelago, where renting a room can cost more than 700 euros. According to a study of the idealistic real estate portal published last September, up to 91 people currently compete for each room that is advertised in Palma. The impossibility of leasing a house has fired the demand for this type of space. According to idealist data, renting a Palma study is today up to 90% more expensive than a room on a shared floor, while, according to a recent Fotocasa study, buying a second -hand home is currently a 124% more expensive than 20 years ago.

Not just that. About 250,000 people, 20.6% of the population, and one in three minors (33.3%) of Balearic Islands live at risk of poverty or social exclusion, figures that have been aggravated by the increase in the cost of life or the difficulty in accessing decent housing, among other factors, as stated in the report on the state of poverty of the Xarxa per social inclusion (EAPN), presented last October at the Parliament and That, with data from 2023, makes an radiography of the most vulnerable sectors of the Balearic society and the factors that influence its exclusion with data, as well as a battery of proposals to try to reverse these situations.

Faced with this, a recent investigation by Eldiario.es shows that Balears is the seventh autonomous community that has a greater number of homes in the hands of large holders, that is, of those who have more than a dozen real estate: in total, in total, 26,061 homes, a figure that represents 4.53% of the total archipelago park, composed of 574,813 properties. Of all of them, 6,672 homes belong to owners who have more than one hundred real estate.

Among the new measures approved by PP and Vox in Palma, the Decomming will prohibit camping in vehicles in the municipality, except in places specifically enabled for it, so that caravans and motorhomes can only be parked in allowed places and will not be able to remain in The same place more than ten days.

During the presentation of the new ordinance, the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, clarified that the use of these vehicles is also restricted as housing with “signs of permanence” in public spaces and the infractions will be considered serious, with sanctions of 750 to 1,500 euros. Likewise, agents are also enabled to proceed with the removal of the vehicle if the person responsible for it is not. However, if the infraction is committed by a person in a situation of social vulnerability, the infraction could be suspended if it has a social vulnerability report and would be referred to social services.

“I understand that a vehicle is to move, a house is something else. A car, a caravan or a motorhome is not to live, ”Martínez replied when asked by journalists.
