AMC has just released ‘Reprisal’ (Monday, 8 pm), the series that follows the story of Katherine Harlow, a fatal woman who after a failed attempt to end her life returns with a new identity: Doris, an apparent and fragile mistress from home, seeking revenge on her own brother, the same one who tried to kill her. American actress Abigail spencer (‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Mad Men’) is the protagonist of this action thriller created by Josh Corbin (‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and ‘Fargo’), which takes place in a context of gangs, Robin Hood-style thieves, neon lights and an indefinite epoch. The Republic spoke through Zoom with the interpreter, who is also the best friend of Meghan Markle (wife of Prince Harry).
What was it like working on this story created and directed by Josh Corbin?
He is wonderful, a young talent who has a lot of Quentin Tarantino. I can’t wait to see what he does and will create in the future because he is so genuine. I feel lucky that he trusted me for his character, I adore him and always want him around.
How did you prepare to play Katherine Harlow? What do you rescue from a character like her?
It’s interesting because we had a good time to prepare and preview. It has been playing a super feminine woman, but inside she is super powerful, a great boss, in fact, that made me feel very proud. I think that all the women in the series did a great job, I am not disparaging the men, but I feel that being this a very masculine world, the female characters are far above, they are very beautiful and at the same time complicated.
‘Reprisal’ is set in the seventies, eighties, in various times. Was this condition created on purpose?
The series is set in the present, but it is like all eras and none at the same time. Sixty, seventy, eighty, but not very different from 40 or 20, it was like choosing something from each to build this new environment. I’ve always wanted to work on timeless projects and I feel that in this series there is a very interesting relationship with time. Love it. I’m interested in how all of this was created.
How much has your career grown since ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Mad Men’?
I guess I keep growing I feel lucky to continue doing what I love and interesting roles, it makes me curious to know what lies ahead, but it’s great to be able to act so much for so long.
What has been your life experience regarding the pandemic?
It was interesting because all the productions were on standby and I needed a break, a new beginning, a space to order my life. I think everyone has been on hiatus, it helped me to connect on another level with myself and see who I am. It is painful that a pandemic has to come to get to that point, but now that we are emerging again, I do not want things to return to normal, I do not want the pandemic to end and they come out with ‘again again’. I want us to be different, to come back slowly, to see this as a transition. I need to slow down, dedicate my time to be on projects that interest me and that I am producing, dedicate more to manufacturing them, make them more personal.
You are one of the best friends of Meghan Markle, do you think, like some, that the media demonize her?
I do not comment absolutely anything on that subject.
What do you expect from a series like ‘Reprisal’?
I think you can expect the unexpected, which is definitely a unique adventure, with many characters, work, very sexy too. In fact, I hope that people are left wanting more and that people who have seen my work before are surprised by what I have done now.
