Tetsuya Yamagami, who shot dead Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, admitted to trying to make a bomb. This is reported by the agency on July 10. Kyodo with reference to law enforcement sources.
At the same time, it is not specified whether the detainee planned to use the bomb to assassinate Abe.
According to the report, the man also made several firearms.
Earlier that day it became known that the attacker was charged with murder.
The 67-year-old politician died on July 8 at the Nara Medical University Hospital after he was attacked. The assassination attempt on Abe took place in the morning during a speech by the former prime minister in the city of Nara as part of the election campaign before the elections to the upper house of parliament. Yamagami shot him in the back twice with a makeshift weapon.
The attacker was detained on the spot, it turned out to be a 41-year-old former sailor of the country’s self-defense forces. He explained his act by the fact that he suspected Abe, allegedly in connection with the religious structure, because of which his family was impoverished.
Now residents of the city of Nara are carrying flowers to the site of the assassination attempt on the former Prime Minister of Japan. The queue of those wishing to honor the memory stretched for several tens of meters.
The farewell ceremony for the former Prime Minister of Japan will be held on July 11 at Tokyo’s Jojoji Temple. The politician’s funeral is scheduled for July 12, they will be held in Abe Shimonoseki’s hometown in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
