The honoring ceremony, which took place under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, President of the UAE, coincided with the International Day of Human Fraternity, which was unanimously approved by the United Nations to celebrate the signing of the historic Abu Dhabi Document on Human Fraternity on February 4, 2019.
The fourth edition of the award was won by the Catholic Sant’Egidio Community and Kenyan peacemaker Shamsa Abubakar Fadil, known as “Mama Shamsa”, in recognition of their efforts to promote the values of human brotherhood.
The Zayed Prize for Human Fraternity this year highlighted the idea of hope as a value and message to promote brotherhood and human coexistence.
The ceremony included two virtual speeches via video from His Holiness Pope Francis, Pope of the Catholic Church, and His Eminence the Grand Imam, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayyib, Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Chairman of the Council of Muslim Elders, “honorary winners of the first edition of the award,” as they congratulated the winners of the award for the year 2023.
Sant’Egidio was honored for its effective humanitarian initiatives, including the “Humanitarian Tracks” program that supports refugees, as well as its successful efforts in peace negotiations, conflict resolution, and its promotion of human coexistence in various parts of the world, from Guatemala to Mozambique.
Professor Alessandro Zaccuri, former president of the Community of Sant’Egidio, a member of the Presidency Council of Sant’Egidio, and the national member of the Liencien National Academy of Sciences in Italy, who received the award on behalf of the Sant’Egidio Community, said, “Today, the values and principles of human fraternity that guided Sheikh Zayed and which guided us We are guided by it in our efforts today.”
He added, “This award encourages us to continue our work to build a future of human brotherhood in all parts of our world.”
Mama Shamsa, the peacemaker and prominent community activist, was honored for her efforts in advancing the empowerment of youth and women in Kenya, as well as her care for young people and protecting them from engaging in a life of violence, criminality and extremism, by providing them with advice, care and training.
“This honor is not only about winning, but about how we live and achieve the goals and objectives of this prestigious award,” Mama Shamsa said.
“I want people in Kenya and around the world to know that one does not have to come to the United Arab Emirates to feel this spirit that Sheikh Zayed was known for, but that this spirit and its impact can reach a person wherever he is,” she added.
The Zayed Prize for Human Fraternity is an independent annual international award that celebrates individuals and entities from all backgrounds anywhere around the world who work selflessly and tirelessly, transcending the boundaries of division and divisions to advance the timeless human values of solidarity, integrity, fairness and optimism, and to achieve real achievements towards promoting peaceful coexistence in societies. .
The list of previous winners of the award includes prominent personalities and organizations such as Latifa Ibn Zayatne, a French-Moroccan activist known in the field of combating extremist ideas; President of the Emad Foundation for Youth and Peace, Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, King Abdullah II of Jordan and his wife Queen Rania, and the Foundation for Haitian Knowledge and Freedom “Focal”.
The award was established in 2019 to celebrate the historic meeting that took place in Abu Dhabi between His Holiness Pope Francis and His Eminence the Grand Imam, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, during which they signed the Human Fraternity Document.
