The second richest Australian woman has decided to donate her entire fortune to a noble humanitarian goal, according to the British “Dale Mail”.
Melanie Perkins now leads a technology enterprise valued at more than $55 billion. She and her husband, co-founder Cliff Oberscht, own a 30 percent stake in Canva, a graphic design company, which is over $16.4 billion.
The company’s impressive growth was driven by the work-from-home boom forced by the novel coronavirus pandemic, which has provided 60 million customers in 190 countries across the world.
But the 34-year-old does not plan to keep that fortune. Last December, the couple signed a pledge to donate their stake in the company to the Bill Gates Foundation, which works to eradicate extreme poverty.
“We have this deeply optimistic belief that there is enough money, goodwill, and goodwill in the world to solve most of the world’s problems. We feel it’s not just a huge opportunity, but an important responsibility, and we want to spend our lives working toward it,” the pledge letter read.
“Who needs all this money personally?” Perkins said in the letter.
Perkins and her husband, Obrecht, met at the University of Western Australia. They set out on their journey to make money together by selling airbrush tattoos at local fairs.
After school, the ambitious young woman would sell handmade scarves at local markets and stores. She was also earning money giving side lessons to fellow students in graphic design.
The idea for a graphic design project came to her in 2005 and she started the company Canva, the leader in its field today.
“My fiancé became my co-founder, and we started working in my mom’s living room,” she said.
The couple started with a bank loan and a $5,000 tax credit, which they used to advertise online and send samples.
In 2014, the couple moved to Sydney, Australia, to develop their business.
