Exactly one year ago, Russia blew up the Kahovka dam in Ukraine. The extent of the destruction will only be properly known years later. Tetjana and Jevheni Teslja live by the artificial lake, where life was turned upside down.
The Kahovka Dam was built in the heartlands of Ukraine because Joseph Stalin wanted to subjugate the Ukrainians to his power. For the same reason, Putin’s administration blew up the dam exactly one year ago. HS’s report tells about the “Great Meadow”, the heart of the tension between Ukraine and Russia.
Veven though it had already been 15 months since the big offensive started by Russia and the enemy was only twenty kilometers away, the daily life of the Teslja family at their summer place in southern Ukraine had settled into its normal course.
A small house and a hectare of land were located right on the shore of the lake. The farmland on the edge of Marjanske village was so good that there was enough corn, potatoes, cabbage and strawberries to sell.
